It works like an external USB sound card with phono input, which allows you to record on a computer (PC or Mac) the signal from a turntable or any other signal connected to its phono / line input. It also has a headphone output and a line level output to send the signal from the phono / line input or the music played on the computer to an amplifier. It can be powered by USB connection or AC / DC adapter. If not connected to a computer and powered by an adapter, it can be used as a phono preamplifier to connect the turntable to a line input on a mixer or to listen to through the headphone output.
